It’s almost “Allergy Season” again… itchy eyes, scratchy throat, runny nose and lots of sneezing. Have you ever thought that you never had allergies as a kid but then they magically developed as you aged? What’s up with that? What if I told you that allergies are the result of a toxic and overloaded liver? Today, I will discuss:
An allergic response is an exaggerated response of the body's immune system to a substance that is normally harmless to the body. The offending substance is called an allergen and can include; dust, dust mites, grass pollens, certain foods, food additives, chemicals, some metals like nickel, and animal hair to name but a few. Initial exposure to the allergen leads to the production of specific antibodies. These antibodies attach themselves to body cells. On additional exposure, the allergens then bind to the sensitized cells by bridging the antibodies, like a key fits into a lock. Once unlocked, the mast cells release histamine and other inflammatory chemicals. These inflammatory chemicals are responsible for the “allergy” symptoms as swelling, redness, itching, constriction of the airways and increased mucus secretion. The liver and allergies The liver has over 200 different jobs that it performs daily - one is to identify toxic substances and clear them from the body. These include metals, chemicals, molds, as well as antibodies that the body has made and histamine that has been produced. When the liver is working properly – it filters properly and prevents the allergens from harming the body. If you are constantly overloading your liver with toxins from the environment, the food you eat, cleaning products, pain medication, alcohol, skin products, your liver becomes overwhelmed, slows down, becomes sluggish and starts to store the toxins. An increased toxic load in the body and in the liver causes the immune system to be over-stimulated. If the liver is sluggish, histamine is not broken down properly and builds up in the body. When pollen or another allergen enters the system, both the immune system and the liver pump out histamine in response. When this happens, all the symptoms of seasonal allergies flare up.
