How Does The Liver Impact Your Health?

The liver is located in the upper right quadrant of the abdominal cavity, and it is the second largest organ in your body.

The liver holds about one pint (13%) of the body's blood supply at any given moment. So, what does the liver do?  It is a giant filter and more than 500 vital functions have been identified with the liver. Few people realize the part the liver plays in hormone balance within the body.
Let’s explore the liver’s function, why keeping your liver healthy is critical to hormone balance, and how to keep your liver healthy.

  • Purifies the blood of drugs and other toxins, removes bacteria from the bloodstream.  It removes nutrients that are kept for energy and releases waste.
  • Production of bile, which helps carry away waste and break down fats during digestion.
  • Production of certain proteins for the blood, cholesterol and special proteins to help carry fats through the body.
  • Makes hemoglobin and stores iron, regulating blood clotting.
  • Conversion of excess glucose into glycogen for storage (glycogen can later be used for energy) and to balance and make glucose as needed.
  • Stores fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K)
  • Regulates hormones (estrogen) and eliminating excess hormones.  When the liver is not functioning well, estrogen is reabsorbed through the digestive system. Estrogen builds up in the body leading to estrogen dominance. Too much estrogen can lead to: Breast cancer, Weight gain, Irregular or abnormal periods, Breast tenderness, Mood swings, Headaches, Recurrent yeast infections.

Signs Of A Sluggish Liver: If you are experiencing any of the following, it could be a warning that your liver is struggling.

  • Elevated cholesterol levels
  • Weight gain
  • Heart disease
  • Digestive problems
  • Skin rashes or allergies
  • Blood sugar problems
  • Signs of hormonal imbalance
  • Intolerance to alcohol
  • Intolerance to coffee
  • Easy bruising
