The herbicide glyphosate, Roundup, has been used since the 1970’s, under the guise that side effects were minimal. However, recently, concerns have increased worldwide about the harmful direct and indirect health effects on health. What is it?
Glyphosate inhibits certain enzymes in the plant, so that they are unable to make proteins, and then they die. Round-up Ready crops: In 1996, they started making GMO crops in the US and now 90% of corn, 90% of cotton and 95% of soybean crops in the US are designed to “tolerate” Roundup. Meaning that it does not kill them, and they are resistant. What that means is that they spray EVEN MORE of this nasty chemical on the crops, and they will be fine. Estimates suggest that one pound of glyphosate is applied in the U.S. every year for every man, woman and child, in America. Many non-GMO items have been shown to have some of the highest levels of glyphosate. Non-GMO foods such as: Oats, wheat, barley and legumes like chickpeas and lentils tend to be very high in glyphosate because these crops are sprayed with glyphosate right before harvest as a desiccant to speed the drying process. In 2015, the World Health Organization reclassified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans”. Last year, after thousands of lawsuits from cancer patients or their estates, Bayer, the chemical maker, is settling current and future lawsuits for more than $10 billion. Bayer said the settlement agreements “contain no admission of liability or wrongdoing.” They will continue selling the weed killer because it stands by previous assertions that it’s “safe when used as directed”. 21 countries have banned or restricted use in them, while the US continues to use it freely and without caution. So, why is it so dangerous to our health? Creates “gluten sensitivity” – Stephanie Seneff, MD Senior researcher at MIT– will put links to her references in comments. Acts as an “antibiotic” and causes issues with the gut flora and can make the person sensitive to many things. Many people eat gluten in other banned countries and are just fine.
For more information: Check out the book “Toxic Legacy” by Stephanie Seneff. She gets in depth about Glyphosate. So, what can you do about this?
