Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Why It Matters

Pregnancy is an exciting time for any expectant mother, but it can also bring discomfort and pain. As the body changes to accommodate a growing baby, many women experience aches and pains in areas such as the back, neck, and pelvis. However, these issues can be effectively managed with chiropractic care. In this blog, we'll take a closer look at why chiropractic care prior to and during pregnancy is so important.
At Healthy Living Chiropractic, we've seen three common issues that affect pregnant women. The first is sciatica, which is a burning, tingling, or painful sensation that travels down the back of the glute and leg. This issue is caused by increased weight in the front of the belly, which puts stress on the lumbar spine. As a result, mothers have to pull their upper back and glutes back to stand properly, which strains the muscles of the back. Increased curves also cause pain and discomfort.

The second issue we see is neck and upper back pain. This issue is caused by the same reasons as lower back pain: increased curves and tension on the neck and upper back. Pregnant women may experience more headaches, pain in their hands and arms, and other discomforts. However, chiropractic adjustments can help alleviate these issues.

The third issue we commonly see is an abnormal fetal position. The Webster Technique is designed to balance the pelvis and make it easier for the baby to find a head-down position. This technique involves analyzing the tailbone and adjusting the tight side, then applying gentle, sustained pressure on the round ligament on the opposite side. This helps relax the tissues in the front of the abdomen, allowing for more movement of the baby in the pelvis. Most mothers report that their babies move around more following this procedure. Additionally, chiropractors can use techniques to support the baby in flipping onto a proper head-down position, which can result in decreased labor time.

At Healthy Living Chiropractic, we highly recommend that women seek chiropractic care early in pregnancy to avoid some of the common health ailments. While later care can still be effective, preventing issues is always the best approach. Pregnancy doesn't have to be painful and uncomfortable. By taking care of your spine and pelvis during the process, you can have a much more comfortable and enjoyable pregnancy.
Don't just take our word for it. One of our patients had this to say: "I'm so thankful for Dr. Adrienne. Her additional training in the Webster Technique and in keeping my body in correct balance helped me to encourage our latest addition to move into a good birthing position."
